SPOOM

The Society for the Preservation of Old Mills

Grants

SPOOM offers grants for mill related projects that are supported by a non-profit organization and are open to the public. Grants are also available to individuals doing research into mills and milling operations that would also be of benefit to SPOOM members and the general public. Grants will be considered for specific requests such as interpretive signs, small repair jobs, brochures, publications, landscaping, materials purchase and research. Grants will also be considered for those needing funds to match other local, state or federal grant programs.

Application Guidelines

  • Send a written request to the vice president of SPOOM, Sandy Jones Birkland, on a letterhead showing the name of the non-profit organization and, if applicable, a copy of your IRS determination letter giving you “501 C3” status. Provide name, address, and telephone number of principal contact.
  • Give full description of how the grant would be used, amount of money needed, cost estimates provided by a contractor, and estimated completion date. You must provide “before” photographs of the project with your application, if photographs are applicable.
  • If the grant is for a particular mill, give a description of the mill and its power source, a statement of ownership and precise location (state, county, nearest community, road name). If water-powered, give creek/river name. State if on National Register of Historic Places.

SPOOM grants are intended to be 50-50 matching grants. Recipients are required to show dated proof of payment for completed services and photographs (or a copy of written material) after which SPOOM will reimburse the recipient 50%, of agreed upon expenses.

To be considered for a 2016 award, all grant requests must be received by the vice president no later than August 1, 2016. At that time, all requests will be considered collectively. Awards will be announced in the Fall 0f 2016 at the annual conference. Please type your application.

Grant recipients must be SPOOM members in good standing.
