Comments:

Built about 1867 by Reuben Dellinger. The original Dellinger mill was built about 1846 on Camp Creek in what is now Avery County. Reuben's wife, Mary Jane, was killed in the mill when her skirt caught in some gears.  Because of that tragedy Reuben sold off the mill and surrounding property, and moved to the Bakersville area where he built the mill which now stands at that site.  When a Spring flood destroyed the mill in 1901, Reuben's son rebuilt it at its present location, further from the creek. There is a 12 foot Fitz water wheel.  The mill passed through several members of the Dellinger family, until it closed in 1955.  It has now been restored to operational condition by Jack Dellinger, the sons of Marvel Dellinger, the last miller.  The mill was entered on the National Register of Historic Places in November, 1998 and has been open to the public since 2000.
